  • Hidden Caribbean

Our island getaway Oct 14 - 21, 2026

Stunning landscapes, fewer people

The Caribbean is a wonderful blend of cultures influenced by indigenous peoples, European colonizers and African traditions. Languages spoken here are English, Spanish, Dutch and of course, local dialects.  While popular islands are feeling the strain of over-tourism on local resources, other are less touristy so they offer a more secluded or authentic experience to visitors. These 'hidden gems' feature stunning natural landscapes, secluded beaches, island wildlife, and cultural experiences without the crowds. Many are only accessible by smaller luxury yachts or boats because of shallow waters, smaller harbors, or lack of infrastructure for larger cruise ships.

LUXURY SMALL SHIP SAILING

We will be cruising aboard the World Navigator, a small luxury ship built for expeditions around the world by Atlas World Voyages. The ship has been moved from Antarctica to the Caribbean, so we will be part of this unique move.  Small luxury cruisers are preferred for their intimacy, personalized service, and ability to access unique destinations that larger ships cannot reach.

OUR CARIBBEAN

The Caribbean very special place for Sunny Jim and I.  We've traveled to many islands, and as most of you know, we lived in the Cayman Islands of the western Caribbean for a decade. We raised our daughters in a close-knit island community where we maintain strong ties.  James and I traveled to the Windward Islands of the Eastern Caribbean to sail with Capt Phil Jones aboard the Splendid Adventurer.

OUR ISLAND BUCKET LIST

There are islands that James and I have never visited and all of them they are ports of call on this cruise: St. Maarten, St. Barts, Saint Kitts & Nevis, Guadeloupe, Dominica and Martinique. Dominica especially has been in my sights for a long time because I've heard much about its natural beauty and ecotourism.  We are also visiting Bequia - St. Vincent and the Grenadines, where Capt Phil often anchored the Splendid Adventurer with us aboard.  Sunny Jim has written three songs inspired by our sailing adventures in the Grenadines : Bequia Sweet, Moon over Mustique and The Invincible Man. Each song has a personal story and you will hear them.  Our final destination on this amazing cruise is Barbados, which we loved when we spent a week there a few years ago. It is a beautiful island and the bajan people are among the friendliest we have met in the Caribbean.  With a number of cruises to choose from, this one's itinerary was the deciding factor.  It's time to explore the Hidden Caribbean.

About the islands we'll visit

St Maarten

St. Maarten, also known as Saint Martin, is an island shared by two nations: the southern part is territory of the Netherlands (Sint Maarten), and the northern part is a French (Saint Martin). The island has beautiful beaches, the charm of two nations, diverse culture, and a lively culinary scene. It's often called the "Europe of the Caribbean" because of its blend of European and Caribbean influences

St Bart's

Before Christopher Columbus made landfall on St. Barts in 1493, it's believed the island was inhabited by Arawak indigenous people. Columbus named the island "Saint Barthélemy" in honor of his younger brother.

In the centuries that followed, St Bart’s was controlled by Sweden and England before becoming a French overseas collectivity. The island reflects the cultural and architectural influences from these times.

St Kitts & Nevis

These lesser-known but luxurious twin islands are breathtaking. St. Kitts and Nevis appeal to travelers looking for a mix of relaxation and beautiful landscapes with a touch of adventure and history. St. Kitts is the more outgoing island, with a great selection of restaurants and bars.

Nevis, the smaller island, is one of the Caribbean’s best kept secrets. It has an inactive volcano and mountains, The beautiful beaches are  uncrowded  except for the wild donkeys, goats, and green vervet monkeys.

Guadeloupe

Guadeloupe is a group of French islands, known for its diverse landscapes and vibrant culture. There are five main islands: Grande-Terre, Basse-Terre, Marie-Galante, Les Saintes, and La Désirade. The islands are famous for their beaches, rainforests, waterfalls, and the active La Soufrière volcano

Dominica

Known as the "Nature Island of the Caribbean," Dominica has stunning volcanic landscapes, hiking trails, and opportunities for kayaking and snorkeling in the Soufriere-Scott's Head Marine Reserve. It is also home to a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Living on the island is done in cooperation with nature.

Martinique

Martinique is known for its stunning natural landscapes, colorful French-Caribbean culture, and great rum production. It's got beautiful beaches, lush rainforests and the island is home to the active volcano, Mont Pelée. Martinique has several well-maintained hiking trails and waterfalls.

Bequia, St. Vincent & Grenadines

The largest island in the Grenadines, Bequia is known for its tranquil beauty, relaxed atmosphere, and seafaring culture. The island offers an authentic Caribbean experience, with beautiful beaches, excellent snorkeling and diving spots, and a slower pace of life than many other popular destinations. “Bequia Sweet” written by Sunny Jim and Capt Phil describes the island perfectly.

Barbados

Barbados is known for beautiful beaches, rum distilleries, and vibrant culture. It's also recognized for delicious cuisine, particularly the national dish of flying fish and cou cou. The island’s culture is influenced by its British colonial past and African heritage. This is reflected in its food, music, and festivals.

Luxury Small Ship Cruising

World Navigator

Adventure Meets Luxury

World Navigator

The World Navigator encompasses Atlas Ocean Voyages’ signature style of relaxed luxury, highly personalized service and destination immersions. It accommodates only 196 passengers and 127 crew, so if you appreciate personal attention, you will love this ship. The vessels interiors blend vintage 1940’s with modern chic that’s both upscale, casual and inviting. Ships this size take you to places larger ships can’t go. Exclusive and secluded islands usually have shallow waters, smaller harbors, or lack of infrastructure for larger ships.

The Dome

Adventure Meets Luxury

World Navigator

On the ship we'll celebrate the longstanding tradition of afternoon tea at The Dome observation lounge, where finger sandwiches, pastries and a delightful assortment of teas are complemented by 270-degree and overhead views of the scenery surrounding the yacht. Here you will also find espresso drinks available throughout the day, as well as pre-dinner cocktails and canapés. It's a great gathering place for our group.
